Curtain Call

There’s hardly ever a dull moment on the Seattle stage. Whether you’re a fan of dance, theater, or classical music, the curtain is always rising.

The Paramount Theatre (*911 Pine St; hosts touring Broadway musicals, including Rent (Feb 21–26) and Mamma Mia! (Mar 28–Apr 2). Meanwhile, 5th Avenue Theatre (*1308 Fifth Ave; stages some of the biggest local musicals, from The Pajama Game (Feb 9–Mar 5) to The Secret Garden (Apr 14–May 6). For those that want powerful voices along with an engaging story—even if they’re not singing in English—Seattle Opera (*321 Mercer St; is the way to go with world-class performances including Mozart’s epic The Magic Flute (May 6–20).

The local theatrical scene comes to life on the stages of Seattle Repertory Theatre (*155 Mercer St; and ACT Theatre (*700 Union St; The Rep’s season gets surprisingly musical with Woody Sez: The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie (Jan 6–29) and David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s collaboration Here Lies Love (Apr 7–May 28). Seattle also serves as the home for terrific niche companies like the Bard-focused Seattle Shakespeare Company (305 Harrison St;

For the truly adventurous, On the Boards (100 W Roy St; offers up a cultural grab bag of experimental and dance theater that tends to blur the lines between mediums. On the classic dance front, Pacific Northwest Ballet (*301 Mercer St; always dazzles with grace, whether performing favorites like The Nutcracker (Nov 25–Dec 28) or world premieres throughout the season. On the modern dance side, Velocity Dance Center (1621 12th Ave; acts as an incubator for top local choreographers to debut their new works.

Last but not least, classic music reigns at Benaroya Hall (*200 University St;, home to Seattle Symphony (* The Grammy award- and Emmy award-winning ensemble performs the works of masters and cross-genre collabs like pop-infused Bugs Bunny at the Symphony (Mar 3-5).
