SEATTLE – At this year’s South by Southwest Conference & Festivals (SXSW), Visit Seattle will launch its newest film series, “Music Genesis,” at the Rolling Stone Lounge on Thursday, March 14, 2019. The series celebrates the musical legacy of Seattle by taking a deeper look at artists, like Sir Mix-A-Lot and Mary Lambert, who have written songs inspired by the city.
At the Rolling Stone Lounge, the first two episodes of the film series will debut and feature Sir Mix-A-Lot and Mary Lambert. The premier event also features a panel with the director Austin Wilson and Rolling Stone Editor Joe Hudak, as well as a cocktail reception, and a special announcement about the 2019 Seattle Story Award.
The premiere night will kick-off and close with musical performances by Seattle artists, Valley Maker and Whitney Ballen, who will also be featured in the Rolling Stone Live: Austin Emerging Music Showcase on Friday, March 15, 2019.
Guests can enjoy a taste of Seattle during the cocktail reception with small bites from Chef Maximillian Petty from Eden Hill Restaurant and beverages from some of Seattle’s top spirits and wine makers including Mischief Distillery, Fremont Brewery, Three Rivers Winery and Nine Hats Wines.
On March 14 “Music Genesis” will be released on VISITSEATTLE.tv. “Music Genesis” is a multi-episode series that takes a unique spin on music in Seattle by inviting people to experience the stories behind the lyrics, and the city that inspired them. Follow Sir Mix-A-Lot as he speaks to how the 1988 nation-wide hit, “Posse on Broadway,” came to be and how it was inspired by Seattle. In another episode, Mary Lambert unveils her song, “Shame,” featured on her next album that drops later this year.
Through projects like “Music Genesis,” Visit Seattle continues to build upon its rich catalogue of entertainment-based content to share the deep and textured story of Seattle. As in years past, Visit Seattle will also renew its commitment to filmmaking by giving an emerging director not just the opportunity, but the funds, to actually create a film inspired by the city itself in partnership with Film Independent.
This year Visit Seattle and Film Independent will reward an independent filmmaker who embodies diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision with the 2019 Seattle Story Award. The winning filmmaker will have a history of transforming people through rich stories – exactly what Seattle does for anyone who spends time here.
Potential filmmakers will be nominated by notable members of the film community. The winner will receive a cash award to create a film inspired by Seattle and be paired with a mentor from Film Independent to provide guidance and feedback on the script, production details and post-production. The film will debut at a September event in New York City, hosted by Rolling Stone and then be distributed through VISITSEATTLE.tv and other channels.
