SEATTLE – Chihuly Garden and Glass, Visit Seattle and members of the glass art community announced Refract – The Seattle Glass Experience, which will take place October 17-20, 2019. Held at various locations throughout the region, the lineup will include a mix of exhibitions, art parties, talks, tours and demonstrations, along with open studios and collector events.
The Studio Glass movement has more than fifty years of history in the United States and the industry has expanded dramatically since then, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. According to a recent study by the Glass Art Society, “The Landscape of Glass Art in America,” the Pacific Northwest is the leading regional hub for glass art in the United States. The same study reported 74 percent of the public surveyed are interested in learning more about glass art. With more than 100 studios calling the area home, the Pacific Northwest is an ideal place to do so.
“Artists who work in glass in our region are pushing boundaries, mixing multiple forms of media, and exploring new technologies. It has been incredible to watch the growth of the community over the years,” said Michelle Bufano, Executive Director of Chihuly Garden and Glass. “Refract will be an opportunity for artists, studios, museums, and exhibitions to come together and welcome longtime fans and curious newcomers alike to learn about and celebrate what makes our arts community so special.”
Participating organizations include Chihuly Garden and Glass, Tacoma Art Museum’s Rebecca & Jack Benaroya Wing, Museum of Glass, Traver Gallery, Abmeyer + Wood Fine Art, Stonington Gallery, Glass Art Society, Pilchuck Glass School, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Chihuly Studio, Seattle Glassblowing Studio and Western Neon.
Additional details on programming and events will be released. Visit refractseattle.org to find out more about this new celebration. Additional information on the study of the state of glass art in America can be found at Landscapeofglass.com.
