Tschabalala Self

1/26/2019 through 4/28/2019 | Frye Art Museum

Museums Capitol Hill/Central District

In collage-paintings, sculptures, and video installations, Tschabalala Self creates multilayered “avatars” that resist reductive representations of blackness and the norms of portraiture. The artist’s first solo museum presentation on the West Coast highlights her engagement with the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality, and the iconographic significance of the black body in contemporary culture.
