Ryohei Tanaka is internationally known for his exceedingly fine etchings. He creates rich surfaces that juxtapose various subtle yet distinct textures. Leaves, thatch, wood, tile, stone, snow, and water come together to create astonishingly tactile and sensual images. Tanaka’s aesthetic sensibility is an equally important element in his work. He playfully uses visual dissonance to generate renewed interest, causing viewers to reappraise what originally seems to be exquisitely rendered but quotidian imagery. This exhibition will showcase both black-and-white and color etchings, including several pieces from his highly sought-after Persimmons series.
