Readings & Lectures Capitol Hill/Central District

Robert Spalding takes us on a tour of Seattle’s monuments, statues, busts and plaques in his book, Monumental Seattle: The Stories Behind the City’s Statues, Memorials, and Markers (Washington State University Press). The stories behind the stolen Tlingit totem pole in Pioneer Square, Seattle’s maritime and military history and its cultural heroes are all included in the book, but this evening’s talk focuses on monuments and statues in our own neighborhood and nearby. Monumental Seattle traces the history of these works, exploring their deeper meaning and the context surrounding their creation and discusses how changing societal values affect public memorials.
