Readings & Lectures Capitol Hill/Central District

Portland journalist Nancy Rommelmann’s book To the Bridge: A True Story of Motherhood and Murder, examines the circumstances and aftermath of the deaths of two young children murdered by their mother, Amanda Stott-Smith, who pushed them over the railing of the Sellwood Bridge in 2009. Stott-Smith’s grandmother Jackie Dreiling sums up the question on everyone’s mind: “How do you understand the not understandable and forgive the unforgivable?” Rommelmann employs compassion and emotional honesty in her investigation to try to comprehend the motivations behind the crime and its aftermath, helping readers understand the implications, if not the answer, to Dreiling’s question. Nancy Rommelmann appears in conversation with Claudia Rowe, author of The Spider and the Fly.
