Down from Vancouver come two collaborators in a timely book drawn largely from the tar sands of northern Alberta. Global Warming and the Sweetness of Life: A Tar Sands Tale (MIT Press) is a look at what is being done at what is probably the world’s largest industrial site, one with many ecological ramifications. Also part of their journeys, and part of this book in illustration, is acclaimed cartoon artist Joe Sacco. The book—which depicts in all manner of ways the ecological horror being wrought—also includes photographs by Louis Helbig.
