Local Sightings 2018 – The Last Hot Lick

9/28/2018 | Northwest Film Forum

Film & Media Arts Capitol Hill/Central District

Jack Willits (Jaime Leopold) is a rambling troubadour, an original member of the illustrious Americana group, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, who has not given up his dreams of glory while he grinds it out on the road from gig to gig as he approaches 70. His routine is upended when he picks up a nomadic woman (Jennifer Smieja) on the side of the road, and though her luminous voice promises success, her secretive nature portends an emotional upheaval that Jack is not prepared for. Writer/director Mahalia Cohen looks upon people, landscapes, even objects with a purifying, almost ethnographic sensitivity, and the performances of Leopold and Smieja are magnificent in ways that transcend mere technique.
