Jing Hua Li
Turndown Attendant,
Grand Hyatt Seattle
Jing Hua Li worked in a hospital in China prior to her immigration to the U.S. in 2002. She moved her young family to Seattle and joined the housekeeping staff at the newly-opened Grand Hyatt Seattle upon arrival.
Why did you choose to live and work in Seattle?
I saw beautiful pictures of the Space Needle, boats and water. The weather is good - not too hot and not too cold. The air is clean and there is nature and animals all around. Seattle is a good place to raise a family [Jing has two daughters, ages seven and two].
Why does tourism matter?
Working hard and doing your best is important. The hotel has also taught me the importance of setting work priorities. It is important to think of the hotel guest first, so I make decisions and schedule my work around their needs and their schedules. Customer service is very important here. This is a four star hotel and we try to give five star service!
Why does tourism matter to you?
I have learned a lot and I am very lucky. The Hyatt has helped me study English during the past three years [Jing recently graduated her ELS class]. Also, I have learned about Seattle culture and festivals and I really know the downtown now.
How do you see your role as a tourism ambassador?
I want to be in Seattle. Every day, I want to do my best job. If you smile, people feel happy. I try to give true smiles, because people know the difference [between smiles that are genuine and those that are not]. I pay attention to the needs of our guests. I try to know how they feel and what they are thinking. We want them to come back again!
