Tonight: Eat in!
In Seattle, we’re spoiled. We have a bounty of amazing restaurants with some of the world’s best chefs manning the kitchens. What we also have is access to the same abundance of fresh, beautiful and local ingredients that these renowned restaurants and chefs have. So tonight, sharpen your knives, shake out that apron and get ready to eat in!
Below are my favorite shopping locations that’ll surely inspire your own culinary wizardry.
Start downtown at the ever-popular Salumi in Pioneer Square, which will require you to stand in line before the doors open to have first pick of the day’s selection of cured meats. Next, head to the Pike Place Market and into the longtime favorite De Laurenti’s for a wonderful selection of fresh pastas and cheeses.
In my opinion, cooking and eating are much more enjoyable with the right wine and I would suggest perusing the ample selection at Pete’s in the Eastlake neighborhood for a bottle or two.
From there, I’d head south on Rainier Avenue and park at Pacific NW Fruit & Produce, an open-air stand with an outstanding selection. After choosing your veggies – but while you are still parked – walk south a couple of blocks to Borracchini’s Bakery, which has been around since 1922, and pick up a fragrant loaf of fresh bread. From Borracchini’s, stay on foot and continue south for one more block until you reach Mutual Fish. Here at Mutual Fish you may just rub elbows with one of those world’s best chefs because this is the place in Seattle to buy fish. From sushi-grade Yellowfin tuna to Dungeness crab or King salmon you’ll be sure to find the star of the show at this stop.
After making your way through these delightful shops you are bound to have ideas galore and ingredients that could put you in the running for the next James Beard Award. Happy cooking!
