On August 30, 2015, Visit Seattle’s namesake yacht joined the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The 70-foot yacht will ply the world’s most challenging oceans and visit 14 ports-of-call in the international series – all while promoting the Emerald City as a growing international visitor destination and business hub.
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which benefits UNICEF, is the world’s longest ocean adventure and regarded as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. Spanning 40,000 nautical miles, the race takes almost a year to complete and consists of 12 teams competing against each other on the world’s largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts.
Visit Seattle’s sail and hull will display the city’s skyline and include logos from co-sponsor Seattle Sports Commission, as well as host port partners the Port of Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina and the Seattle Historic Waterfront Association.
The race is the only event of its kind for amateur sailors. Around 40 per cent of crew are novices and have never sailed prior to completing their comprehensive training program ahead of their adventure.
Seattle will be one of 14 host ports throughout the race, welcoming the crews of all competing yachts in April 2016 at the end of the Mighty Pacific Leg 6 from Qingdao, China.
