Darrell E. Bryan Appointed to U.S. Department of Commerce Travel and Tourism Advisory Board

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Darrell E. Bryan, President and CEO of Clipper Navigation, Inc. was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker to a two-year term on the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board.

The appointments of Bryan and other national travel and tourism industry leaders were made at the department’s Tourism Advisory Board meeting on April 8 in Chicago. Officials of the Departments of State, Interior, Homeland Security, Transportation and TSA were present, as well as DHS Sec. Johnson and Commerce Sec. Pritzker who were present via teleconference.

The board serves as the advisory body to the Secretary of Commerce on matters relating to the U.S. travel and tourism industry. Its primary function is to provide advice that helps the government prioritize policies that will contribute to growth, including enhanced visa issuance, investment in transportation infrastructure, and research for decision-making. It also supports the National Travel and Tourism Strategy, which is pursuing a goal of attracting 100 million international visitors to the United States by 2021.

The Travel and Tourism Advisory Board’s current agenda includes streamlining the U.S. visa and entry process, enhancing tourism at national parks, improving data collection on foreign visitation and supporting Brand USA, the nation’s first global marketing effort to promote the United States as a premier travel destination and to communicate U.S. entry/exit policies and procedures to worldwide travelers.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute as member of this already successful advisory board,” said Bryan.

“We’ve been honored to have Darrell Bryan an industry leader here in Seattle and across our state and we’re proud of his new national travel and tourism leadership as well,” said Tom Norwalk, President & CEO of Visit Seattle. Darrell Bryan is President and CEO of Seattle-based Clipper Navigation, Inc. which operates the Victoria Clipper vessels and provides transportation, tours and accommodation packages throughout the Pacific Northwest. The company has served more than eight million customers since it began in 1986.

Bryan is a current board member of several travel and tourism organizations including Visit Seattle, the Washington Tourism Alliance, Interferry, U.S. Customs Border Protection and Un-Cruise Adventures. He currently chairs the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) Insurance Committee and is a past chair of Victoria Transportation Association, Interferry, Washington State Ferry Expert Review Panel, Puget Sound Passenger Ferry Coalition Steering Committee and the Propeller Club of the United States. He co-founded BESTT Coalition (Business for Economic Security, Tourism & Trade) and served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism in 1994.

Bryan was honored by Victoria, British Columbia as the Business Person of the Year in 1998 and received the State Tourism Person of the Year Award in Washington State in 1995.
