Outlook on Tourism
A Message from Don Welsh, President & CEO, Seattle's Convention and Visitors Bureau

Dear Tourism Supporter,

Thanks to years of preparation and investment by Seattle area hotels, the Port of Seattle and other private and public sector businesses, our destination is now playing on the global stage. And, our industry contributes more than ever to a vibrant regional economic base that includes Microsoft, Boeing and other Fortune 500 companies.

Don Welsh

For the second summer in a row, our bureau announced record visitor volumes and spending according to the 2006 Market Profile and Economic Impact of Seattle-King County Visitors, compiled by CIC Research, Inc. Overnight visitor volumes increased to 9.4 million and expenditures rose to $4.75 billion. Additionally, state and local taxes paid by visitors increased to $419 million.

Our summer destination report card also gave high marks for year-to-date hotel performance, future bookings for conventions, new air service, Port of Seattle cruise business and worldwide media exposure.

In July, at the Seattle Hotel Industry Outlook, representatives from Smith Travel Research and other industry experts reported strong Seattle hotel performance, especially in occupancy, revenue and demand growth. Seattle placed at or near the top of the 25 largest U.S. cities in these key categories of performance.

This summer, Air France inaugurated non-stop service between Seattle and Paris, capping years of efforts by trade and tourism officials at the Port of Seattle, State of Washington, SCVB and other business leaders. On July 4, Aeromexico inaugurated the first daily non-stop service between Seattle and Mexico City, complimenting the extensive Mexico-Seattle flights offered by our own Alaska Airlines. Governor Gregoire was an active participant in all these efforts. Also in July, the eyes of the world fell on our region as Boeing rolled out its 787 Dreamliner.

Our cruise success story at the Seattle Homeport continued this summer (and through early November) with seasonal passenger embarkations of 390,000 and 190 sailings offered by five major cruise lines.

It's been a phenomenal year thus far for regional tourism, and 2007 is shaping up to be a record year. However, the same dedication, commitment and passion that got us where we are today will be required to keep our destination competitive in the months and years ahead.

Here's to a bright future,

DonWelsh

Tourism Commission Members Announced
Statewide tourism marketing momentum increased on August 6 as Governor Gregoire announced appointments to the Washington Tourism Commission. The new commission, which was created by the governor through legislation that was signed into law last April, will work within the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) to help promote the state as a visitor destination. The commission will create a strategic plan for tourism development and a biennial marketing plan (expected no later than March 31, 2008). Additionally, the legislation more than doubled state funding for tourism promotion through a public-private partnership.

"Tourism is economic development," said Governor Gregoire. "Tourism means jobs and income for Washington families and businesses. Washington is a unique state with a lot to offer. People want to travel here and now we are making it clear that we want them to travel here with a comprehensive tourism strategy and sufficient funding."

Washington State Tourism Commission members have been appointed to terms beginning July 27, 2007 and, with the exception of the designated CTED commissioner whose term ends at the governor's pleasure, all terms end June 30, 2009.
