Columbia City

Columbia City: a truly diverse neighborhood.

This “neighborhood of nations” occupies one of the country’s most diverse zip codes, where descendants from European settlers, East African immigrants, Orthodox Jews, and other cultural groups make for a true melting pot.

Eat

Caribbean and Cajun Island Soul dishes up curried goat and coconut corn muffins, while La Medusa anchors date nights with upscale Mediterranean-inspired fare. Wash it down with a chocolate cherry stout from Flying Lion Brewing. For dessert, the all-natural ice cream from Full Tilt comes in an array of creative flavors, like peanut butter and Sriracha jelly.

Shop

The May-to-October Columbia City Farmers Market sells red lentil dhal and treats like Columbia City Bakery’s beloved pistachio snail pastries. For style, try menswear purveyor Hunt and Green Eileen, where sales of gently used Eileen Fisher apparel help support charities.

Play

Musts include the Columbia City BeatWalk, an art walk meets block party, and the heritage-rich Northwest African American Museum. Concert venue The Royal Room and revived Ark Lodge Cinemas are music and film stalwarts, while Columbia City Theater is “the city’s finest-sounding room,” according to SPIN magazine.
