Inaugural Seattle Voluntourism Project

New voluntourism program inaugurated April 22, 2009 by Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau and Seattle Works.

Tourism industry volunteers spent the afternoon volunteering at the Danny Woo Community Garden in the International District. Projects included litter and weed removal and ground preparation for the installation of a children’s garden. 30 participants collectively gave 90 hours of volunteer time to the Garden.

"I welcome this voluntourism initiative that offers visitors to our city a unique way to experience Seattle and our active volunteer culture, learn more about our city, and help the less fortunate in our community."
-Mayor Greg Nickels

"Meeting planners don't have the ability to go into a city and organize voluntourism components on their own. Seattle is smart to offer resources and to plant seeds with planners. This initiative goes beyond win-win – meeting groups benefit, the community benefits and the CVB benefits."
-Maureen Thompson, Director of Events, Association of School Business Officials International
