Frye Art Museum brings Napoleon and 17th Century Egypt to Modern Day Seattle
The Frye Art Museum presents Napoleon on the Nile: Soldiers, Artists and the Rediscovery of Egypt, Aug. 30, 2008-Jan. 4, 2009. The exhibition includes 90 engravings, some measuring 50 inches across when unfolded, from the Description de l’Égypte. The Description de l’Égypte catalogues Egypt’s mysterious artifacts, architectural ruins, plants, animals and customs and was created by 150 hand-picked "savants"- artists, writers, scientists and engineers -during Napoleon Bonaparte's unsuccessful attempt to colonize the country in the late 1700s. Among the eye-opening works are renderings for the Temple of Luxor and the ruined temple of Ramses II at Thebes, naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire’s images of turtles, mongoose and bats and sketches of weaving and basket-making by Nicolas Conté, who invented the graphite pencil.

A World of Art Under One Umbrella
The Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival returns for its 13th year, Oct. 17-26. The festival is the largest event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, showcasing the latest and greatest in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered film, from major motion picture premieres to cult favorites. Screenings, parties, panel discussions and networking events will be happening at venues throughout Seattle, including the Northwest Film Forum, the Cinerama, Harvard Exit Theatre and more. Returning to the festival after a successful debut last year is the "Gay TV Dinners" series at Central Cinema, featuring classic television with gay characters and images, served up at dinner hour with a special menu and beer and wine. And, just in time for Halloween, a "Queer for Fear" series of horror films will bring scary thrills and chills, capping off with a closing night extravaganza featuring Elvira in person for a 20th anniversary celebration screening of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
