Seattle Art Museum Unveils New Calder and Michelangelo Exhibitions
The Seattle Art Museum is opening two new exhibitions by two different but equally-known artists on Oct. 15, 2009. Alexander Calder: A Balancing Act is an exhibition by the work of the American sculptor Alexander Calder, featuring small-scale works on paper as well as jewelry, large-scale sculptures and one of the artist's largest mobiles. Drawn primarily from private collections, the exhibition includes more than 80 pieces, many of which have rarely been seen by the public. The bold sculptures and two-dimensional works of the exhibit track Calder's creative development from 1927 through the mid-1970s, with an in-depth look at his most celebrated period in the late 1940s. The exhibition will be on view Oct. 15, 2009 – Sep. 7, 2010.

The private side of the man behind one of the 16th century's most recognizable styles is revealed in Michelangelo Public and Private: Drawings for the Sistine Chapel and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti. Organized by the Seattle Art Museum (the exhibition's only venue) and in collaboration with the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, the exhibition shows a side of the artist that he never wanted the public to see. Michelangelo burned most of his drawings before his death so he wouldn't appear less than perfect and tarnish his reputation as an inspired genius. The largest collection of Michelangelo's drawings still in existence resides at the Casa Buonarroti, although for conservation reasons only a small handful can be on view at any given time. Twelve of these drawings are traveling to the Seattle Art Museum. In addition to drawings and models that reveal Michelangelo's creative process, the exhibition also includes works by contemporaries and followers, including painted and sculpted portraits and commemorative medals, as well as engraved copies of passages from the Sistine Chapel ceiling that reveal the original appearance of Michelangelo's masterpiece. The exhibition will be at the Seattle Art Museum Oct. 15, 2009 – Jan.31, 2010.
