Seattle's Venerable Summer Food Festival Cooks-Up Another Year of Foodie Favorites
Seattle's annual Comcast Bite of Seattle festival returns July 17-19, 2009, giving locals and visitors an affordable opportunity to sample dishes from some of the city's top restaurants. A summer tradition since 1982, the festival has grown from an estimated 75,000 attendees its first year to more than 500,000 in 2008. Held at the Seattle Center, the Comcast Bite of Seattle features more than 50 local restaurants, that offer small portions of their most popular dishes, as well as 30 food product booths.
Event highlights this year include The Alley, hosted by Seattle chef and restaurateur Tom Douglas. A $10 admission fee to The Alley offers diners a meal of small samples from a daily lineup of seven local restaurants. The chefs and menu in The Alley change daily, featuring a total of 14 Seattle area restaurants. Proceeds benefit Food Lifeline, a community charity working to end hunger in Western Washington. Local chef Thierry Rautureau will emcee The Bite Cooks!, a cooking demonstration featuring 18 of Seattle's top chefs displaying their skills in a high-energy and interactive show in front of a live studio audience. Attendees at the festival who are 21 and over can sample the area's best beers at the festival's beer gardens or famous Washington wines at the wine tasting room. For the younger ones, the Family Fun Zone features singers, dancers, actors, inflatable bounce rides, interactive games and kids' karaoke. Attendees of all ages will enjoy local and national musical acts on five stages. For more information, visit www.biteofseattle.org.

Seattle Art Museum Opens Two New Exhibitions for Summer 2009
The Seattle Art Museum is opening two new and contrasting exhibitions on June 25, 2009. Target Practice: Painting Under Attack: 1949-78 is an international and historical survey of the turmoil that the medium of painting endured in the years following World War II. The exhibit documents why artists felt compelled to deconstruct paintings in order to make their statements heard. Target Practice includes works by well-known artists like Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, as well as lesser known artists who were creating equal works in Europe, Asia, South America and North America. With more than 70 works of art, including documentary photographs and video, Target Practice introduces the breakthroughs made by artists in the years between 1949 and 1978. Target Practice: Painting Under Attack: 1949-78 runs through September 7, 2009.
Different in style from the works in Target Practice, Andrew Wyeth: Remembrance focuses on seven paintings that span the career of Andrew Wyeth and show his favorite subjects: his wife Betsy and the land around their farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; his neighbor Karl Kuerner; and Kuerner's nurse Helga Testorf – Wyeth's favorite model and the subject of the famous series of watercolor and tempera portraits known as the "Helga pictures." Andrew Wyeth: Remembrance runs through Oct. 18, 2009. For more information, visit www.seattleartmuseum.org.
