The Bite of Seattle Serves Up New Eats, Bites and Taste Treats
The Bite of Seattle, July 18-20, 2008, is a long-standing Seattle summer tradition, inaugurated in 1982 to recognize the culinary excellence that the city had to offer. The festival has grown from an estimated 75,000 attendees its first year to more than 450,000 food seekers during the three-day festival, who sample from more than 60 restaurants on the grounds of the Seattle Center. For the first time this year, the Bite of Seattle will be offering “Just a Bite!,” featuring local restaurants that will prepare a “bite” for festival goers, a smaller food portioning for just $3.75. Also at the 2008 Bite is “Right Bite”, offering fresh, healthier choices that have fewer calories, fat or sodium than other menu items or may be vegetarian or vegan. For more information on the new bites or on the Bite of Seattle as a whole, visit www.biteofseattle.com.

Seafair: Celebrating Community for 59 Years
Seattle’s summer celebration, Seafair, is back for its 59th year of summer fun, June 29-Aug 3, 2008. Seafair is one of the largest annual festivals in Seattle, with 30 sanctioned community celebrations, parades, festivals and other family-oriented entertainment. Annual events such as the Milk Carton Derby, Torchlight Run and Parade, Seafair Fleet Arrival, unlimited hydroplane racing on Lake Washington and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show are expected to bring out large crowds. The approximately month-long festival officially kicks off on July 5 with the Seafair Pirates landing at Alki Beach and the 37th annual Allstate Milk Carton Derby at Seafair. Nearly 100 colorful milk carton boats of all shapes and design will compete for $10,000 in prizes. The derby is highlighted by a full day of boat-building "competition" for children, adults, families and businesses to build milk carton watercraft for show and racing on Green Lake.

The Southwest Airlines Torchlight Parade on July 26 appeals to all ages. All the favorites, including the Seafair pirates, precision drill teams, marching bands, community floats, clowns and many more delight the 300,000 people who line the parade route.

The Chevrolet Cup at Seafair, Aug. 1-3, is the culmination of the month-long Seafair Festival and is undoubtedly the "Seafair" weekend that is looked forward to each summer. The action-packed weekend includes the fastest powerboats in the world, the Unlimited Hydroplanes and the Lights class with its high-intensity, deck-to-deck racing. In addition to action on the water, there is also a wide-variety of entertainment options for the whole family on land. There will be music all weekend in Genesee Park and a fireworks display on Saturday. For a full calendar of events, visit www.seafair.com.

Burke Museum to Host Spotlight Exhibit on the Plight of the Polar Bear
The polar bear was recently listed as a threatened species under the United States Endangered Species act, a situation brought to life in a new environmental photography exhibit opening at the Burke Museum on June 28, 2008. The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World, by wildlife photographer Steven Kazlowski is a large-format, color photography exhibit that reveals the plight of the polar bear as it faces rapid change in its habitat, from Hershel Island in Canada to Point Hope, Alaska. Film footage and audio of the polar bear augment the photos. An interactive, hands-on study area allows exploration of polar bear science and global warming, as well as what can be done to make a difference. For more information, visit www.burkemuseum.org.
