Seattle's Opening Day Sails into the "Wild, Wild West"
Opening Day, the official opening of Seattle's boating season, takes place on Saturday, May 2, 2009 along Seattle's Montlake Cut. This year's festivities will include a morning of crew races, a sailboat race and the Opening Day boat parade, which features elaborate thematically decorated vessels. This year's parade theme, "Wild, Wild West" was chosen to allow for broad interpretation and creativity in music and decoration. Opening day festivities will also include the Windermere Cup Regatta, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Participants in this year's regatta include the University of Washington men's and women's teams, the Oregon State University men's team, the University of Miami women's team and the Brazilian Rowing Federation men's and women's teams. www.seattleyachtclub.org

It's Tugboat Time at the Seattle Maritime Festival
Seattle's rich maritime heritage will be on display at the annual Seattle Maritime Festival, May 7-9, 2009. Taking place on the Seattle waterfront, the festival boasts the nation's largest tugboat race, with 40 boats expected to race in three heats on "Family Fun Day," May 7. Other festival activities include the World Invitational Survival Suit Races, a fireboat demonstration and the 13th annual Seattle Waterfront Neighborhood's Waterfront Chowder Cook-Off, held at participating restaurants. www.seattlepropellerclub.org

EverGreen Escapes Offers New Seattle Voluntourism Experience
EverGreen Escapes, a Seattle outdoor adventure company recently began offering a half-day voluntourism tour on Tuesday afternoons. The tour affords participating volunteers the opportunity to take part in habitat restoration in Seattle nature parks. Volunteers meet with restoration stewards and assist in habitat improvement. Depending on the season, volunteers will remove invasive plants that choke out important native species, plant native plants or conduct beach clean-ups to remove trash that is harmful to wildlife. Hotel or cruise terminal pick-up, refreshments and afternoon tea are included in the tour. www.evergreenescapes.com

Northwest Folklife Celebrates Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Centennial
Northwest Folklife festival celebrates its 38th year as Seattle's unofficial kick-off to summer on Memorial Day Weekend, May 22-25, 2009. Northwest Folklife is the largest folk, ethnic and traditional arts event in North America, drawing in excess of 250,000 attendees and more than 1,000 musicians, dancers and visual artists. Each year a fraction of the festival's programming focuses on a community or topic in the Pacific Northwest. This year, Northwest Folklife will kick off the centennial celebration of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (A-Y-P). The Cultural Focus: A-Y-P Centennial will include special performances, exhibits and demonstrations by ethnic groups that made Seattle their home in the early 1900s, such as Scandinavians, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiians, Filipinos and Alaska Natives. Ring Cycle Package at Seattle's Mayflower Park Hotel
One of the leading opera Wagnerian companies in the U.S., Seattle Opera will once again present three cycles of Richard Wagner's signature production, The Ring of the Nibelung, in August 2009. The Mayflower Park Hotel, located a short ride on the Seattle Center Monorail from Marion Oliver McCall Hall, has joined Seattle Opera to offer a hotel package during the production. The package includes:

Icelandair to Start New Non-Stop Seattle to Reykjavik Route
Icelandair announced that it will begin new service between Seattle and Reykjavik on July 22, 2009. Icelandair will offer four flights a week, departing Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. As the only Nordic airline to serve the West Coast, the carrier will serve as a gateway to Scandinavian countries, including non-stop connections through Reykjavik to Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, as well as other European destinations. Icelandair is the fifth airline to fly non-stop from Sea-Tac to a European destination. www.icelandair.com

Carnival Cruise Line to Enter Seattle Cruise Market
Carnival Cruise Line has announced that it will operate a schedule of seven-day, round-trip Alaska cruises from Seattle beginning in May 2010. The 17, week-long cruises aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit will depart Seattle on Tuesdays May 11 - Aug. 31, 2010. Port calls include the Alaskan towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as Vancouver Island, British Columbia. www.portseattle.org
