Anchors Away at the Seattle Maritime Festival
Given the amount of water in and around Seattle, it's natural that the city's maritime heritage be celebrated annually. The 2008 Seattle Maritime Festival will be held May 8-10 on the Seattle waterfront. The festival boasts the nation's largest tugboat races, with 40 boats expected to race in three heats, beginning at 2 p.m. on "Family Fun Day," May 10. Other festival activities include three free Argosy harbor cruises, free children's admission to the newly renovated Seattle Aquarium (when accompanied by a paying adult) and a U.S. Coast Guard Sea-Air Rescue demonstration. For more information, visit www.seattlepropellerclub.org or call (206) 728-3163.

Summertime in Seattle Kicks Off at the Annual Northwest Folklife Festival
The Northwest Folklife Festival celebrates its 37th year as Seattle's unofficial kick-off to summer on Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-26, 2008. The Northwest Folklife Festival is the largest folk, ethnic and traditional arts event in North America, drawing in excess of 250,000 attendees and more than 1,000 musicians, dancers, tradition bears and visual artists. Each year a fraction of the festival's programming focuses on a different community within the Pacific Northwest. This year, "Urban Indians" are the featured community. Festival visitors will have the opportunity to learn whom and what urban Indians are and what traditions they celebrate. Admission to the Northwest Folklife Festival is free, although a donation of $10 per person per day or $20 per family per day is welcome. For more information, visit www.nwfolklife.org
