During the past two years, Seattle has ranked among the best U.S. cities for the size of its carbon footprint by the Brookings Institution and has been called one of the country's cleanest cities by Forbes magazine.
Seattle's stunning natural setting and progressive, green-thinking culture have established it as one of North America's most environmentally-committed cities. Nestled between three national parks, two mountain ranges, scenic estuaries, lakes and channels, Seattle features a vibrant city center that coexists beautifully with pristine nature. The city's tourism slogan, metronatural, reflects the bounty of urban and outdoor attractions enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.

Seattle has been on the leading edge of curbside recycling, clean drinking water and many other green initiatives spanning the last two decades. In 2005, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels launched the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement to advance the goals of the Kyoto Protocol. Mayors from nearly 900 cities have since joined Seattle in pledging to reduce harmful carbon dioxide emissions in their communities and urge governmental action. |
