Densho

Densho is a Japanese term meaning "to pass on to the next generation," or to leave a legacy. This legacy project documents the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unprecedented event that had a major impact on Seattle's history.

Filipino American National Historical Society

This national organization was founded in 1982, and is an excellent source of information on Filipino American history, scholarship and artistic work.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

BOOKS
Independent bookstores such as the Elliott Bay Book Company and the University Book Store have a wide selection of local history books. Gift shops at the Wing Luke Asian Museum and the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) offer a selection of heritage books as well. Several web sites list comprehensive bibliographies of scholarly works related to Asian American culture and history; the list below is a sampling of works of general interest.

Reflections of Seattle's Chinese Americans: The First Hundred Years
Edited by Ron Chew, Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1994.
A thoughtful collection of essays edited by one of the community's heritage leaders.

Seattle's International District: The Making of a Pan-Asian American Community
By Doug Chin, Seattle: International Examiner Press, 2001.
A comprehensive history of one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods and the only one of its kind in America where Chinese, Japanese and Filipino settlers created an integrated community.

Sento at Sixth and Main: Preserving Landmarks of Japanese American Heritage
By Gail Dubrow, Seattle: Seattle Arts Commission, 2000.
A beautifully illustrated book documenting several Japanese American heritage sites.

Shirakawa: Stories of a Pacific Northwest Japanese American Community
By Stan Flewelling, Auburn, Washington: White River Valley Museum and UW Press, 2002.
A lovely description of life in an agricultural community south of Seattle.
