ESSAYS & ARCHIVES

The Black Heritage Society of Washington State Inc. digitized a sample of their outstanding photo collection as part of the King County Snapshots Project.

Dr. Quintard Taylor of the University of Washington created BlackPast.org, an online reference guide to African American History which includes extensive information about African Americans in the Pacific Northwest.

HISTORY LINK the on-line encyclopedia of Washington State history, includes nearly 300 essays about African American heritage in the state, including profiles of Black pioneers and other individuals, significant milestones in community development and integration, and neighborhood histories.

Some highlights include:

4Culture's African American Heritage Resources Guide
Lists a variety of organizations, historic sites and publications about local Black history.


BOOKS

Independent bookstores such as the Elliott Bay Book Company and the University Book Store have a wide selection of local history books. Gift shops at the Seattle Art Museum and the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) offer a selection of heritage books as well. Several web sites list comprehensive bibliographies of scholarly works related to African American culture and history; the list below is a sampling of works of general interest.
