City of Grunge celebrates Kurt Cobain

A new exhibition exploring the life and work of legendary Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, has opened in Seattle.

The exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) titled “Kurt”, documents the influence and impact of the singer, who defined a generation when he hit the music scene in the 1990s.

Seattle was the birthplace of grunge and Cobain lived in the city until his death in 1994 after moving from Aberdeen in Washington State.

The band recorded their first album in America’s Emerald City and played many of their first gigs at numerous venues around Seattle, including the infamous Crocodile CafĂ©.

“Kurt” features photographs, artwork and documentaries and during the exhibition, which runs until September 6, 2010, the museum will also host a variety of other events, including film screenings and lectures.

Seattle is renowned for its rich musical heritage and the city was also home to the iconic Jimi Hendrix, who died 40 years ago this year.

A permanent exhibition to the rock star’s work can be found at the Experience Music Project (EMP), which features 8,000 artefacts including original artwork, clothing and guitars.

Music fans can also take advantage of the new Seattle Music Map, launched this year, which details the venues and districts which influenced so many artists from Quincy Jones and Ray Charles to Jimi Hendix and Pearl Jam.

Located in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is just a nine hour flight from the UK. The iconic Space Needle and Pike Place Market are just a few reasons to visit this relaxed city that is surrounded by water and snow-capped mountains.
